Transdermal Patches are Highly Effective at Delivering Vitamins and Supplements

The skin is the largest organ in the human body by mass. The use of salves, ointments, potions, and even patches, consisting of plant, animal, or mineral extracts dates back to the oldest existing medical records of man.

Recognizing that the skin can be an effective route to absorb substances, adhesive transdermal delivery devices (patches) were developed over time to deliver specific medications in specific time-released doses.

The first topical patch was approved by The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for treating motion sickness back in 1979. Since then, the FDA has approved patches to help people successfully quit smoking, manage pain, and prevent pregnancy.

More recently, adhesive transdermal patches have become the latest advancement in the delivery of micronutrients (vitamins and minerals). Vitamin patches allow nutrients to pass through the skin directly into the bloodstream. In this way, it bypasses the digestive system, which can be affected by stress, medications, and alcohol.

You simply apply the patch to clean, dry skin anywhere on your body that is free of lotions and hair. Common application sites include the chest, rib cage, upper arm, shoulder, or hip area. Depending on the manufacturer, the micronutrients from the patch are typically absorbed within 8-24 hours.
